Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for tip truck operations
   • Access, interpret and apply vehicle haulage documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtained, confirm and apply work requirements such as; shift briefings/handover details/work orders, /plans/specifications/quality requirements/operational details
   • Identify, obtain and implement signage requirements per the project traffic management plan
   • Select vehicle, tools and equipment
   • Check tools and equipment for serviceability and rectify or report faults
   • Identify, confirm and apply environmental protection requirements from the project environmental management plan
2. Conduct tip truck pre-operational checks
   • Carry out pre-start, start-up, park and shutdown
   • Check tip truck controls and functions, including tray, steering, brakes and manoeuvrability for serviceability and ensure any faults are rectified or reported
3. Operate tip truck
   • Identify and manage site operating hazards and risks, apply safe operating techniques
   • Manage engine power, ensure efficiency of truck movements, and minimise strain on the engine, drive line and gears
   • Coordinate engine power with gear selection, ensure smooth transition and operation within torque range
   • Operate tip truck to work instructions
   • Monitor road/traffic conditions, consider road conditions, traffic flow, distance and load, ensure safety of people, property, equipment, loads and facilities
   • Halt vehicle smoothly, using the engine retarder, gears and brakes
4. Load, transport and tip materials
   • Position tip truck at load and discharge points with a minimum of manoeuvre
   • Carry out smooth and controlled tip truck movements including the raising and lowering of the tray
   • Ensure weight and distribution of load is assessed for type of material and size of vehicle within vehicle capacity
   • Maintain safety and security of load, including load cover requirements, from loading site to discharge site
   • Discharge load on slope and/or over face at fill site
   • Dump/spread material evenly, to work instructions
   • Clear, lower and secure tray before resuming travel
5. Carry out operator maintenance
   • Ensure tip truck is safely parked and prepared for operator maintenance and shutdown
   • Conduct visual and physical inspection and fault finding
   • Remove and replace defective parts
   • Carry out scheduled maintenance
   • Maintain/update and submit vehicle written records
6. Clean up
   • Clear work area and dispose of, or recycle, materials
   • Clean, check, maintain and store vehicle, tools and equipment

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

works effectively with others to undertake and completion of tip truck operations to meet all required outcomes including:

preparing for and organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

using a range of communication techniques and aids to advise others of work activity and exclusion zones

demonstrates completion of tip truck operations that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

organising work activities to comply with site standards

obtain and apply signage requirements

carry out log-on, pre-start, start-up, park-up and shutdown procedures

operate, steer, manoeuvre and position tip truck

raise and lower tray smoothly

apply load cover

discharge load on slope and/or over face

dump and spread materials

halt and park tip truck

carry out inspections and identify faults

process written records and reports

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of the following when conducting tip truck operations through:

recording, reporting and handover procedures

start up and shutdown procedures

vehicles within specifications and limitations and reporting faults in vehicles and ancillary equipment

tip truck types, characteristics, technical capabilities and limitations

safety requirements

operational, maintenance and basic diagnostic procedures

site isolation and traffic control responsibilities and authorities

safety data sheet and materials handling methods

load quantity calculations
